CS:GO fan recreates Dust2 in the Unreal engine with great results
What would Counter-Strike: Global Offensive look like with better graphics?
YouTuber Quixel answered that question with a tutorial on how to recreate iconic CS:GO map Dust 2 in Unreal Engine 4. Though Global Offensive is graphically solid, the UE4 remake is absolutely stunning.
Check out the full video here:
The tutorial focuses in on the area surrounding the A bombsite, including a portion of long, catwalk, and the CT spawn. The remake is meticulously made, with detailing and textures that add a lot of character to the desert-themed map. Quixel’s remake doesn’t include the entirety of Dust 2, but even just the small portion he made is brilliant.
The Dust 2 remake is an interesting addition to what has become a growing field of fan-made game remakes.
Starting in 2015, fans began actively remaking portions of classic video games in Unreal Engine 4 with examples ranging from a faithful recreation of Pong on the Atari 2600 to a Dark Souls-style reimagining of arcade platformer Ghosts‘n Goblins. Things haven’t slowed down since then with fans creating playable demos of remade games including Tomb Raider 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Though these projects are rarely fully realized, they have become a popular fascination with gamers and a source of frustration from publishers who are occasionally outperformed by amateurs.
Judging from Quixel’s video, he has no intention of attempting to recreate the entirety of CS:GO and is just looking to bring new life to one of the game’s most memorable locales. It is unclear if he is planning to finish remaking Dust 2 or if he is going to move onto another project from here.
