G2 open 2019 Mid-Season Invitational with dominant win over SKT
The LEC champions lived up to fan expectations and more, obliterating the LCK representative in what was a one-sided match.
The early game was slow and measured as both teams tried to read the opponent and look for easy opportunities. G2 focused their early attention on the top lane, trying to get Martin “Wunder” Hansen on Jayce ahead. The gamble paid off and at 13 minutes, G2 had a 3K gold advantage thanks to Wunder.
In the mid lane, Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok put Rasmus “Caps” Winther slightly behind. This advantage gave SKT some room to breathe and hope for the late game, but it wasn’t enough to recover from an otherwise dominant laning phase for G2. In the bottom lane, Park “Teddy” Jin-seong and Cho “Mata” Se-hyeong largely absorbed pushing pressure but gave up first blood and failed to become relevant as the game progressed.
G2 transitioned smoothly into the mid game, grouping and taking every neutral objective available on the map. SKT kept waiting for a mistake from the G2 squad, but the opportunity never came. This total control translated into a victorious team fight and an ensuing baron with an 8K gold advantage at 24 minutes.
Powered up by the baron buff, G2 caught SKT in the top quadrant of the jungle and killed two members. SKT retreated and G2 sieged without opposition. Inside the SKT base, G2 got two more kills and picked up the first win at MSI.
The second round of games for in the first day of competition will see G2 go against reigning World Champion Invictus Gaming. SKT still has a chance to get a win against LMS representative Flash Wolves.
