MOONTON unveils new formats for MSC and MWI ahead of EWC 2026

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) has officially revealed major format changes for both the Mid-Season Cup (MSC) and the MLBB Women’s Invitational (MWI) ahead of the 2026 Esports World Cup (EWC), introducing new qualification paths, revised group stages, and updated knockout structures.
The announcement provides the clearest look yet at how MLBB’s two flagship EWC tournaments will operate this summer, with tournament organizers opting for formats designed to increase competitive depth while giving more teams a chance to fight their way into the main event.
MSC 2026 format breakdown
For MSC 2026, the competition will once again begin with a Wild Card stage. 10 teams will be split into two groups of five, with each group playing a single round-robin format in best-of-one matches.
The top team from each group advances directly to the Wild Card semifinals, while second, third, and fourth-placed teams move into a newly detailed Cross-Group Gauntlet stage. Fifth-place teams are eliminated from the tournament.
The Cross-Group Gauntlet introduces an additional survival challenge. Third-place teams swap groups and join second and fourth-place finishers in newly formed brackets. Each bracket follows a ladder format where fourth place faces third place, and the winner then challenges the second-place team. Only one team from each bracket survives.
Those two surviving teams advance to the Wild Card Final Bracket, where they meet the two group winners. Three best-of-three series determine the final Wild Card champion, with only one team securing a place in the MSC Group Stage.
Following the Wild Card phase, the MSC Group Stage will run from July 22 to 26. 16 teams will be divided into two groups of eight and compete in a double-elimination bracket. Every match in the stage will be played as a best-of-three.

The structure creates two qualification routes per group. Teams reaching a 2-0 record advance directly to the knockout stage, while teams finishing with a 2-1 record must enter an additional crossover round against qualifiers from the opposite group.
The knockout stage begins on July 29 and adopts a single-elimination format. Quarterfinals, semifinals, and the third-place match will all be contested as best-of-five series. The Grand Final, scheduled for August 1, will be played as a best-of-seven.
MWI 2026 new format revealed
MWI 2026 will follow a similar competitive framework but with a smaller field. 16 teams will be divided into two groups of eight during the group stage, with each group operating under a best-of-three double-elimination format.

As with MSC, teams that secure a 2-0 record will earn direct advancement opportunities, while 2-1 teams will continue through crossover matchups to determine the final knockout bracket.
The MWI knockout stage will also use a single-elimination format. Quarterfinals will be best-of-three series, while semifinals and the third-place match move to best-of-five. The Grand Final will be decided in a best-of-seven showdown.
The updated formats signal a continued effort by MOONTON Games and the Esports Foundation to create longer competitive runs for teams while preserving the high-stakes nature of playoff competition.
With MSC and MWI now featuring clearly defined qualification paths, crossover matches, and extended playoff series, fans have a much clearer picture of what awaits when Mobile Legends heads to Paris for the 2026 Esports World Cup.
