Michigan earns record billions in online gambling, betting revenue

The US state of Michigan has seen regulated online gambling and betting significantly increased the state’s revenue by record amounts, according to new data shared by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
Commercial and tribal operators combined to generate a massive $3.8 billion in gross receipts for 2025. This was a 29.5% increase compared to 2024, reflective of the industry’s immense and ongoing growth.
What’s more, about $3.1 billion of that total came from online betting sites and apps, while $671.3 million was generated from sports betting with wagering volumes also increased compared to last year. In all, it shows that 2025 was a resounding success for the online betting markets in the state of Michigan, with the revenue to prove it.
Michigan sees record online betting revenues in December 2025
December 2025 was the highest single month for iGaming revenue in the state of Michigan’s history. The state was able to produce $315.8 million in gross receipts that month alone from online casinos. Sports betting produced another $84 million in revenue, though this was slightly down from November 2025.
Still, these numbers combined made the month the most successful for online gambling in Michigan yet, showing a continued growth rate for gambling activity for the state.
It was December 2019 when Michigan first legalized online gambling and sports betting. This was after a long year of lobbying, with state legislators concerned over the state’s unregulated online gambling market and the potential lost revenues it represented. Lawmakers argued that Michigan’s bettors would be safer with regulated gambling and that the state would earn additional tax revenue in the process.
In May 2020, the Michigan Gaming Control Board started accepting online casino license applications. The application fee was $50,000, and there was a $100,000 initial license cost as well as a $50,000 annual renewal fee. On top of this, there’s a 20% to 28% adjusted gross receipt determined by the amount casinos are able to earn through betting activities in the state’s borders.

By January 2021, 15 online casinos and sportsbooks went live in Michigan. As of December 2025, leading online casino platforms have proliferated through the state, with the highest earners producing a combined $817.1 million in gross receipts and $768.1 million in adjusted revenue.
The state’s two highest earners in sports betting did nearly as well, with a combined $292.3 million in gross receipts. This shows the value the state of Michigan represents to gambling operators.
Michigan has joined other US states that have legalized gambling in seeing record-breaking revenue. The state of Massachusetts earned $98.4 million in gross gaming revenue in December 2025, the highest ever recorded there. New Jersey also broke earning records, with $7 billion in online gambling revenue in the final quarter of 2025.
Going into 2026, it seems likely that the state of Michigan will continue to see increased revenue from its legalized online gambling and betting operations.
