MGM Resorts, BetMGM commit to more safe gambling support

MGM Resorts International and BetMGM are committing to fighting gambling addiction through new and additional support efforts.

MGM Resorts and BetMGM recently joined the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) heading into March, which is Problem Gambling Awareness Month. Part of joining NCPG includes expanding its collaborations aimed at providing resources and research to support individuals who may be affected by problem gambling issues. MGM Resorts has announced that it’s donating $180,000 to Kindbridge Research Institute to further research on the impact of sports betting across different populations.

“As a global gaming and hospitality leader, we are always looking to support innovative and actionable research that can make a positive impact,” said Stephen Martino, Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer of MGM Resorts. “As our company continues to grow both domestically and internationally, these studies will allow us to support our industry and enhance the sustainability of communities in which we operate.”

BetMGM is expanding its Kindbridge Behavioral Health referral program nationwide, according to a press release. Anyone who participates in BetMGM’s online casino operations across the United States will have access to Kindbridge’s mental health services and gambling addiction support.

“Responsible gaming is a focal point of our operations, and we will continue to invest in programs that promote player protection and well-being,” CCO of BetMGM Rhea Loney said. “Expanding our partnership with Kindbridge ensures that essential support services are always within reach for those who need it.”

This comes at a good time as the industry continues to expand after 2024. More states across the country are looking into the legalization of sports betting and other online gambling operations to increase state revenue. Meanwhile, gambling addiction hotlines have claimed that calls are increasing, especially among younger people.

Calls to Ohio’s Problem Gambling Network increased by 55% in 2023. This was the first year of legalized sports betting in the state. Sports betting was the top reason, followed by casino slot machines and lotteries.

“We are seeing this new trend where it is in fact sports bettors who are making up that big bump in call volume,” Ohio Casino Control Commission’s Michael Buzzelli said.

March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month

Throughout the month of March, MGM Resorts and BetMGM are going to be increasing GameSEnse messaging on their online gambling platforms and sportsbooks in honor of Problem Gambling Awareness Month. These messages will remind sports bettors to take breaks and also provide them with resources for gambling tips and safe practices. GameSense advisors will also be staffed by BetMGM to provide assistance at any time.

MGM Resorts and BetMGM are also going to be expanding their outreach to universities, engaging with University of Nevada students majoring in Gaming Law. These sessions aim to highlight the importance of responsible gaming, not only to keep customers safe but also to support the industry long-term as it further expands across the United States and beyond.

“Our collaboration with MGM Resorts has been a valuable learning experience for Boyd law students, enhancing their understanding of gaming regulations through real-world exposure. Exploring the GameSense program firsthand helps them grasp the importance of responsible gaming, especially as more jurisdictions require such important initiatives,” UNLV School of Law director of graduate programs Sarah Gonzales said.

Other initiatives include providing MGM Resorts and BetMGM employees with responsible gaming training and continuing to partner with the American Gaming Association’s Have a Game Plan, Bet Responsibly campaigns that promote safe betting practices.
