LeBron James will earn more from prediction markets than basketball this year

Superstar basketball player Lebron James will earn more from prediction markets this year than from playing ball thanks to his mind-blowing 15 million dollar Polymarket sponsorship.

The deal has highlighted both the contentious issue of prediction markets and sport (and the true market value of a 41-year-old player) as one of the NBA’s biggest stars now clearly has more cultural cache off the court than the value of a teammate between the hoops.

James, who will reportedly make around 3.9 million dollars this year as part of his two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers will reportedly make around four times that amount in the same time span thanks to a partnership with Polymarket to endorse the prediction market.

However, the nature of the deal, the value behind it, and the alleged links to gambling are causing a stir as what could be LeBron’s final paycheque turns heads.

The first big issue is Polymarket themselves. The prediction market has been accused only last month of operating an illegal gambling company. The NBA has had a complicated relationship with gambling, banning players themselves from betting in all forms, while simultaneously allowing them to endorse and invest in sports betting companies.

This contradiction has been called out repeatedly, perhaps most vocally by San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who on Thursday last week (Oct. 1) called out the hypocrisy of players who endorse sports betting, saying he himself would never do that.

While Polymarket outright denies being betting, the lawsuit by New York state has blurred the lines on this definition. Polymarket itself claims the suit puts it in a position where it must either perjure itself or defy the state.

Beyond this, with LeBron’s big Polymarket payout coming within months of his seemingly bargain bin-price sale to the Philadelphia 76ers, there are rumblings about the prediction market endorsement being linked to the contract signing.

Precedent for this comes from the recent uncovering of the Los Angeles Clippers salary cap scandal, where the Clippers allegedly offered backroom payments, sponsorships, and no-show endorsement to over-pay Kawhi Leonard in excess of the NBA salary cap. Polymarket and the 76ers have not commented on this potential connection.

Finally, there’s the complicated relationship that LeBron now has with prediction markets thanks to his recent trade. After playing the LA Lakers for several years, LeBron’s trade to the 76ers and the prediction markets around that, attracted $270 million in prediction contracts, with apps like Polymarket alone accounting for $45 million of that amount.

As per a Front Office Sports report, LeBron’s Polymarket deal will not focus on Basketball, instead having James act as a promoter of the site’s Football markets. Terms and length of the deal have not been disclosed.

The deal, however, will likely force the NBA and other sporting organizations to finally make a decision regarding prediction markets. At the moment, with the rapid rise of the industry, organizations like the NBA and NFL, as well as their player unions and associations, have not had to deal with the issue of prediction markets and how they’re treated. With basketball’s biggest star making a deal with Polymarket, the organizations will have to play ball or get off the court.
