New Leak Suggests More Classic Pokémon Games Are Coming To Switch

Pokémon Ruby could be ported to the Nintendo Switch

Earlier this year, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the franchise, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen were ported to the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Now, a new leak suggests that Nintendo and company are going to repeat that with other classic titles.

Nintendo Switch set for more classic Pokémon

Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen were dropped on both the Switch and Switch 2 in February. They were a huge success, selling incredibly well. Within six weeks, they’d already crossed four million units sold.

They were pacing right there with Pokémon Pokopia, the top-rated Pokémon game of all time and a very unique, original title. Unsurprisingly, then, it appears that Nintendo is going back to the well.

The latest leak indicates that ports for Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald will all be put on the two Switch consoles pretty soon, bringing the total of classic Pokémon titles available in their original form on the modern consoles to five.

We don’t know much other than the stated plan to port the games, but we can expect them to be very similar to the FireRed and LeafGreen ports. This means that Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald will all be $20 each, and they will function the exact same way they did on the Game Boy Advance.

The leaker indicated these games are planned for September or October of this year; if true, an announcement would likely come in the coming weeks.

Reliable source

The leak in question comes from Shpeshal Nick on X. It has been repeated by other leakers and gaming sources, but that appears to be where this information originated. As with all leaks, it’s best to take it with a grain of salt. However, this leaker appears to be fairly reliable. The source in question previously leaked the Ocarina of Time remake — that one has since been confirmed by Nintendo and is set for a 2026 release. The leaker also leaked the Zelda-themed Switch 2, which has actual photos backing it.

Editor’s view on the future

If this leak comes true, then it appears that Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have a plan for the future. That plan seems to be to continue bringing old, previously inaccessible games to modern consoles They have long been interested in remaking all the games, and this way, they can capitalize on nostalgia, update outdated titles, and bring the old games to modern audiences.

Nintendo also has Switch Online that gives access to old games, so they’re definitely interested in preserving the classics. However, those mainline Pokémon games are simply too valuable, as evidenced by the ridiculous sales, to put on a service that costs, at most, $80 a year.

So, if Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald are ported to the Switch, it could open the door for the same thing to continue happening down the line. Nostalgia is strong, and it’s particularly pervasive within the Pokémon community. As such, everyone involved seems more than happy to take advantage of this and reap the benefits.
