Warhorse Studios, the Creators of Kingdom Come: Deliverance and sequel Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, have announced they’re making an open-world Middle-earth RPG. The developers behind two blockbuster RPG titles revealed they’re working on yet another Kingdom Come title, as well as a new game set in the Lord of the Rings universe.

The reveal came on May 20 via a post on X/Twitter from the studios’ official account, but confirmed earlier rumors that the studio was working on a Middle-earth-themed game.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance devs swap Bohemia for Balrogs with Middle-earth RPG

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a 2018 open world game that plunged players into the medieval kingdom of Bohemia, living the life of a rags-to-riches near-do-well on the fringes of society surviving a war-torn world.

Both it, and its sequel, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, are critically acclaimed as some of the best open world games of all time, and some of the finest representations of the medieval world in the medium.

As a result, fans of the game, and even stray LotR fans, who have likely been waiting for a decent game in the universe since Shadow of War, are ecstatic about the new game.

Little is known about the upcoming title, but its notable that it’s being described as a “Middle-earth” game, not a LotR game. That would suggest you might not see Frodo and the Fellowship in this title, and rather some kind of side story.

Alternatively, the Middle-earth title has been given to several games who operate outside of the main story of Lord of the Rings, including the aforementioned Middle-earth: Shadow of War. But not, it should be noted, the abysmal Gollum game from a few years ago.

Beyond the slight obfuscation about the theme of the ‘Middle-earth’ game, there’s some speculation over the fact that it’s described as a Kingdom Come adventure, with similar mechanics to the Deliverance series of games but a different setting. Could this mean we see more Kingdom Come titles in different settings in the future? Hopefully.

Both games are already generating huge amounts of buzz, and could easily be Game of the Year contenders if they were released today. Although, if you’re considering GotY titles already, maybe check out Kalshi’s market on the current Game of the Year contenders. And stick with Win.gg for more gaming news!
