Is Voice Chat Coming to League of Legends in 2026?

After a decade of being opposed to it, Riot has finally taken steps to implement voice chat in League of Legends. However, the launch of voice chat in LoL has been delayed as the feature is experiencing setbacks. Here’s a rundown of the situation.

Voice chat is coming to League of Legends

Earlier this year, players discovered voice chat-related files on the LoL Player Beta Environment (PBE). Following them, Riot communicated on March 13 that they were now indeed planning a voice chat for League of Legends.

For the longest time, they’ve been opposed to it for two combined reasons. The first one is that it creates a negative experience for groups of people while giving them a competitive disadvantage if they opt out of the feature. The second one is that communicating via text is much more feasible in League than in any first-person game.

However, better technology allowed them to change their stance on it. Namely, two areas will now be able to improve the team voice experience:

Better systems to detect toxicity
A voice changer

Additionally, everyone will have the option to use “voice skins”. Voice skins are voice changers intended for people whose type of voice is typically met with a higher degree of toxic reactions, or for anyone wanting higher anonymity.

Voice chat is postponed with no date announced

On September 8, Riot commented on the topic again. This time, they shared more details alongside a release date. Voice chat will have a rollout per region, with the regions with the fewest languages and the easiest ones to monitor receiving it first. As such, voice chat was to be enabled on NA and OCE in a recent patch update ( 26.20 in October).

However, they announced in the latest patch notes that voice chat will be postponed “a bit” as it currently doesn’t meet the quality bar. Additionally, nothing was said about the release on other servers either. The next ones in line are Korea, LATAM, and Brazil.

☑️ My Take

I think we’re going to have to wait a while longer to get widespread voice chat in LoL. Riot has shown with WASD that they’ll take the time they need to iron out important features, which is great, but might take several more months. As for EUW players… 2027 could be optimistic.
