Is Overwatch Dying In 2026?

Overwatch is not dying

Is Overwatch dying? This is the sort of question that gets posed to all live-service games at one point or another. Because they require active servers and constant attention from developers, there has to be enough of a market to continue funnelling resources into the games.

So, if a game isn’t growing, or worse, if it’s dying, it is bad news for everyone involved. If no one’s playing, then the developers are actively losing money. And if that happens, then the game will eventually be shut down, leaving the players out in the cold.

So it begs the question: Is Overwatch growing, dying or stagnating as of 2026?

Overwatch dying? A look at player counts

Unfortunately, we don’t have data dating back as far as the game goes. It launched in 2016, so it’s been going on for a decade. The same issue popped up when we analyzed whether or not Fortnite was dying, although we had data back to early 2023 for that. Thanks to SteamDB, we have data that goes back to August 2023 to help us answer the question.

Of course, we know that the game is not in its prime, so we can be certain that current player counts are not as high as they were when the game was dominating in the late 2010s. Still, we can assess what the last few years have looked like for the game and whether it’s dying or not.

Overwatch has spiked and grown recently

Right now, the game has over 65,000 active players. In the last 24 hours, the peak was just under 69,000 players. In this three-year time frame, the high was 165,000 players. So, by that metric, the game is clearly not doing as well as it was in February 2026, which acted as something of a temporary uptick.

But that’s just a spike. That actually happened when the sequel to Overwatch dropped the “2” from the title and reintegrated into the first game. And to be truthful, since then, the game is actually growing rather than dying, at least compared to before.

The spike couldn’t be maintained, but the data shows that the average player count is higher now than before. Before the spike, the numbers sat no higher than 61,000. Obviously, current data is above that, and since February, the game has hovered mostly around 75,000. That’s growth, so it is no surprise that the game remains a solid part of the esports betting industry — the Overwatch betting scene is also in a healthy state, with regular events taking place for fans to wager on.

We recently also looked at whether Fortnite is dying, and it is fair to say that all video games go through stages of little growth or even stagnation, and that is where the magic from game developers — knowing how and when to innovate — comes in.

☑️ My view: Overwatch is in fine health

No matter how you slice it, the game is in better shape now than it was a few years ago. We don’t have data from before 2023, but since then, the game is doing well in terms of active players, so we can expect further updates in the coming years from Blizzard Entertainment, and that is an achievement for a title that is a decade old.
