Is Fortnite Growing or Dying in 2026?

Is Fortnite dying?

Fortnite remains a very popular game today, and that alone is an impressive feat. Live service games do typically have longer shelf lives than others, but it’s been nine years since Fortnite Battle Royale dropped. The simple fact that anyone still plays the game and that servers are kept up is unprecedented in the genre.

That said, is the game actually growing or dying? Does Fortnite have the same pull it used to? Is it on a downward trajectory that is going to one day cause Epic Games to give up and shutter the servers? A game like Fortnite doesn’t really have offline modes, after all. Let’s analyze the data closely.

Is Fortnite dying?

Right now, according to Fortnite.GG, the game has over two million online players, and 1.2 million are actively in a match as of Chapter 7 Season 4. In the last 24 hours, almost 1.8 million people were in a match, representing the peak.

Those numbers seem good, but nearly two years ago, the game had its all-time peak (with available data) with over 14.3 million players. By that metric, yes, Fortnite is dying. But it’s not as simple as that.

Sadly, Fortnite.GG does not have data going back to before 2023, so we can’t really compare the current metrics to the game’s prime. We can say with a certain degree of confidence that the game has lost a good chunk of the player base from 2017 to 2020.

Currently, though, is the game on a downward trend? Not exactly. More or less, with some spikes at different points, the game is staying pretty consistent. Take a look at the all-time data available on the site, which spans a little over three years.

In April 2023, the game had about 1.3 million players in a match on average, and the numbers now are nearly identical. There have been peaks and valleys, as evidenced by the chart above, but the game is in the same shape it was over three years ago.

Epic Games has been able to drum up interest at various points. In November 2023, when the OG season first dropped, the game averaged 2.75 million in-match players. When OG became a permanent mode a year later, the game spiked again.

There have been other, smaller peaks, too. Nothing has been sustainable, though. The interest wanes, and the player count dips again. But it doesn’t dip further than usual, as the loyal player base has largely stayed the same. Fortnite betting sites are also just as popular as ever.

☑️ My view

What does all of this mean for Fortnite? They’d surely like to see the game grow, but not dying off is a perfectly acceptable alternative. What’s important is that, while there’s no growth, there’s also no decay.

Fortnite not having much drop-off  nine years later, is impressive. It suggests that, while the prime is long gone, the game isn’t going anywhere. Certain players have quit playing, and almost nothing will bring them back, but there’s still obviously a ton of interest, and there’s a devoted player base. It should be more than enough to keep the game alive for a long time with the frequent updates every season.
