Is Dota 2 dying in 2026? Here's what the numbers really say

The question “Is Dota 2 dead?” has been asked by many people over the last couple of years. Since the game’s player base fluctuates and other MOBAs rise in popularity, it’s understandable that some people feel like Dota 2 is dying and its best days are behind it. However, is this really the case? Let’s find out.

Dota 2 Player Stats – Is Dota 2 Dying?

Once you start looking for some of the best Dota 2 teams or players, there’s a good chance you will find people who claim that Dota 2 is not in its prime. This is partly true because the Dota 2 player count trends show that many more people played the game several years ago. However, it does not mean that the game is dead.

If we take a look at the SteamDB chart, we can see that the average 24-hour peak players is around 600,000. While this number is impressive, the all-time peak was 1,295,114, and it was around 10 years ago. Even if we take a look at the more recent stats, the peak player count in April 2023 was around 800k. There are clearly fewer players than before, but you can’t say that Dota 2 is dead.

The decline in players can be attributed to several factors, including the rise in popularity of other MOBAs. With that said, most people believe that Dota 2’s sheer complexity is one of the main reasons the game isn’t attracting many new players. This fact was backed up by the famous steamer Felix “xQc” Lengyel. According to him, spending 100 hours in Dota 2 will make you worse than you were when you started playing. He said that while analyzing a video where another popular streamer claimed that League of Legends is the most complex game out there.

Arguments for “Dota 2 is Dead”

The biggest argument for why people say Dota 2 is dead is the declining player numbers. While the best Dota 2 players continue to be a part of the game, there are not that many new names. One reason for that is the game’s complexity and the fact that there are tons of options to choose from.

Another reason that some people believe affects the game is The International viewership and trends. The all-time peak Twitch views that Dota 2 got was almost five years ago, when we saw 1.7M people.

Those days are long gone because of Valve’s new approach to The International. Even though it remains Dota 2’s most popular tournament, the prize pool is nowhere near as big and this clearly affects people’s interest.

This leads some people to believe that Dota 2 is in a state of stagnation from top to bottom.

Arguments Against “Dota 2 is Dead”

As we have established, it is clearly more nuanced than to declare that Dota 2 is dead. The first big argument that Dota 2 is definitely not dead is the game’s loyal player base. Even though the numbers are declining compared to a few years ago, 600,000 people are still a lot. In fact, Dota 2 is one of Steam’s most popular games with over 825k very positive reviews, and it seems likely to remain so for the foreseeable future.

We also have to talk about Dota 2 betting. This is among the leading esports for bettors worldwide due to the large volume of tournaments. All bookmakers provide at least a few options and even have exclusive promotions, making it highly popular with bettors.

Dota 2 remains the game with one of the most competitive and active esports scenes. There are numerous competitions to choose from and this keeps fans entertained.

Lastly, we also have to address the various custom games. Many people overlook this, but it’s one of the game’s unique strengths because it allows people to be more creative.
