Is CS2 Dying in 2026?
Counter-Strike is one of the longest-standing esports franchises, having built a loyal fanbase over the course of two decades. However, if you’ve browsed through social media platforms across the past few months, you might have seen people claiming that the game is dying or on a steady decline. Below we’ll take a look at why people are talking about this and answer the question of “is CS2 really dying?”
Player count has dropped for six months in a row
One of the easiest ways to tell if a game is on the downturn is by simply checking out the numbers. If we take a look at CS2’s active playerbase from March 2026 to August 2026, you’ll see a lot of numbers painted red.

The game has effectively gone from close to 1.1 million monthly average players in February 2026 to around 800,000 in August the same year. These numbers show around a 25% decrease in the active playerbase, which is a huge drop in half a year.
Reasons for the “CS2 is dying” narrative
Players-wise, CS2 still looks pretty healthy on the Steam platform, so why are people pushing the story that the game is dying? Well, here are some of the main reasons why.
No New Operations
One of the main reasons why people have gotten bored of Counter-Strike is due to the lack of events – primarily operations.
The last Counter-Strike operation event was Operation Riptide, which ran from September 2021 to February 2022. That’s right – Valve has not released a new event in over four years. The crazy part is Operation Riptide took place in CS:GO, so there hasn’t even been an event since the game transitioned into CS2.
Operations would always bring a lot of hype within the community, motivating people to log back in. But with Valve going radio silent for over four years, many people believe the company doesn’t care about their game anymore.
Too Many Blatant Cheaters
This one isn’t really a secret – CS2 servers are plagued with blatant hackers, especially in Competitive and Premier matchmaking.
As someone who’s in the 22,000 CS2 Premier rating range, I find it impossible to play a normal, fair game of Counter-Strike. There’s almost always a cheater on my team or on the enemy team. At this point, I’ve found Premier matches to be a complete waste of time, which is why I barely even play the game anymore.
Sure, Valve drops ban waves here and there, but it’s so easy for hackers to create or purchase new accounts and just hack again. There’s really nothing much stopping them from ruining games over and over again. The Anti-Cheat just doesn’t do that well.
Lack of Support for Female Scene
Another factor is tournament organizer ESL stepping away from the female CS2 scene. They recently announced the end of ESL Impact, which was the main league for professional female players. This was a huge hit to the female community, and several pro players have even announced they’d be switching over to Valorant.
With ESL Impact now gone, CS2 is losing another demographic, as more female players could end up following the same route to Valorant, where the community is more welcoming and supportive.

☑️ My view: Is CS2 really dying?
Looking at what we’ve discussed above, it’s pretty easy to see why many people are thinking that the game is actually dying. The numbers back it up, as we’ve seen a 25% decrease in active players, cheaters are showing up in every other matchmaking game, and the game is pulling the plug on professional female CS2 support.
But, even though Valve has ignored some of these problems, I think CS2 is far from dead. The very recent IEM Cologne 2026 Major pulled in over 2.7 million concurrent viewers in the grand final, which shows millions of people still want to watch the game. Even though they’re not playing CS2, they’re still actively following the scene.
Sure, CS2 is dealing with some real problems, but we can’t forget that it’s still the most-played game on Steam, even overtaking the likes of Dota 2 and PUBG by a pretty big margin.
There are still a bunch of professional tournaments you can place CS2 bets on, and people don’t necessarily have to play the game to keep it alive. Millions of people are still interacting with the game, whether it’s through trading skins, watching tournaments, or making content.
