Insomniac confirms major change to Wolverine from Spider-Man
PlayStation’s State of Play earlier this week gave fans a good look at the upcoming Wolverine title from Insomniac. The stream opened with nearly 10 minutes of gameplay, showcasing the brutality of Logan and a little bit of the gameplay mechanics. We saw Wolverine fight, heal, and go about his story mission.
Many expected to see plenty of this at the State of Play since the game is set to release mid-September. They also expected or hoped to see what the traversal would be like since Logan can’t swing like Insomniac’s other hero, Spider-Man. Instead, the devs confirmed a massive change from the Spidey games.
Wolverine won’t be open-world like Spider-Man
Insomniac’s Wolverine game is going to be very unlike their Spider-Man games (all three of them) in that it won’t be open-world. The Spidey games were an open-world version of New York, allowing Spider-Man to swing (or fast travel, but how ridiculous would that have been?) around the city as he pleased.

Logan has no such ability. He can’t jump ridiculous heights like the Hulk, either. In terms of traversal, he’s just a person, more or less. During the gameplay showcase, Insomniac showed Wolverine’s movement, but not any traversal. This is because there is no traversal. The game is linear.

They want players to have freedom, but they won’t be able to travel all over the map as they choose, as they could in Spider-Man. In that way, it will be much more straightforward. The areas Logan finds himself in will be open enough for exploration, but they’ll have barriers that weren’t present in Spidey’s New York.
Speaking to IGN, game director Mike Daly said, “I can say we did not set out to make an open world game or a sandbox game. What we really wanted was a high-octane, high intrigue, linear single-player adventure, and the missions reflect that in their structure.”
Their goal here was to hit the bullseye on representing the X-Men character. They felt that that couldn’t be done in an open-world setting where his traversal limits would be exposed. So, don’t expect to be jumping across buildings or sliding down skyscrapers too much.
Despite this change, the game is still poised to be a Game of the Year contender. Kalshi has it on a prediction market. It has begun to rise, though just by 1% so far.
GTA 6 remains the favorite by far.
