WEC26 announces $500,000 prize pool and shares details of this year’s competition
The International Esports Federation has revealed that this year’s World Esports Championship (WEC26) will feature a $500,000 USD prize split across its events. Unveiled by release on Monday (Oct. 26), the prize represents a significant increase from last year’s $100,000 pool
The international tournament, set to feature
Counter-Strike 2,
Dota 2, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, PUBG Mobile and eFootball will take place in Banten, Indonesia, between the 15 and 20 of December, pitting 400 esports competitors from 101 nations against each other.
IESF reveals $500,000 prize pool for WEC26
In their release, the IESF explained the reasoning behind their half-a-million dollar, one of the largest in international non-professional competition, citing the fact that the money can have a drastic impact on helping esports development.
“For a top professional team, prize money can be a well-earned reward. For a national team from an emerging esports nation, it can be a turning point. A podium finish in Banten could fund a season of training, coaching, travel to regional qualifiers, or the equipment a grassroots programme back home has been waiting for. For some athletes, it will be the first prize they’ve earned in their nation’s colours.”
IESF president Vlad Marinescu expanded on the importance of this kind or reward:
“Every athlete in Banten has fought through national and regional qualifiers to be there. This prize pool rewards that effort, and we’ve designed it to reach as many competitions as possible. But ask any champion what stays with them, and it’s rarely the cheque – it’s the roar of the fans over the anthem, and the collective celebration of a nation.”
Earlier this month, the IESF unveiled its plan for
a system of esports governance, during the Seoul Olympic Legacy forum. During a presentation, IESF’s general secretary Boban Totovski outlined a system whereby a standardized rulebook, proctored by the IESF, would be codified.
With rival governing body, the Esports Foundation, delaying the Esports Nations Cup until 2027,
WEC26
represents the first time many international esports competitive bodies will have the chance to compete on an major stage.
