Here's how to get blue essence in LoL after Season 1 changes

League of Legends 2025 Season 1 has changed how players can acquire blue essence, resulting in outrage from many fans and players. So how can you best gather this valuable resource now?
League of Legends kicked off 2025 with the Noxus-themed Season 1 Act 1. Alongside revamping turrets and adding a new epic monster for players to slay, the season changed the overall League of Legends resource formula. Unfortunately, fans didn’t like some of the bigger changes, especially those related to the game’s monetization and battle pass.
The new season has many fans thinking that the game is slowly moving toward a pay-to-win path. First, Riot Games added a harder cap to how many skins free-to-play players can acquire through Hextech Chests. With that smoke clearing up, fans noticed acquiring blue essence is also significantly harder with the changes to LoL in Season 1.
How can you get blue essence in LoL in 2025?
While players can still get blue essence in LoL through the battle pass and champion capsules, Season 1 makes things harder in 2025.
The biggest change League of Legends Season 1 Act 1 made regarding blue essence is the removal of the game’s level-up rewards. Players used to get a champion capsule every time they leveled up past level 30. The capsule could be opened up to acquire champion shards and Blue Essence. League of Legends Season 1 removed most level-up rewards beyond level 30 aside from the borders the game gives to players every 25 levels.
Additionally, the first win of the day daily mission no longer gives players both experience and 50 blue essence. Instead, it gives battle pass experience upon completion, removing another reliable method players had to acquire blue essence daily.
This isn’t to say League of Legends players can’t acquire any blue essence to unlock champions. Players can still disenchant champion shards to acquire the currency and the battle pass gives players more ways to get Blue Essence. These ways include champion capsules and direct blue essence.
Why are fans mad about the blue essence changes in LoL?
Fans are mad about the changes made in League of Legends because it’s tougher to unlock champions by collecting blue essence, potentially moving the game closer to a pay-to-win formula.

While the battle pass gives players champion capsules, the number of these capsules is limited to only four., Blue Essence is limited to 4,750 per battle pass when considering the actual rewards available. These numbers are only for players who are looking grind the full battle pass as is. Those who complete the battle pass can make further progress to unlock five repeating levels. Four levels give players 50 blue essence, while the last paid level gives orange essence.
With over 150 playable champions in League of Legends, most free-to-play players can’t come close to unlocking all of them in a reasonable amount of time given these blue essence changes. Many fans believe Riot Games should unlock every League of Legends champion for free like in Marvel Rivals. And if Riot won’t do that, it should at least revamp the aged free champion rotation system or otherwise make it easier for players to try more of the game’s champions.
