How to change your in-game name in LoL

LoL users with seasonal handles or just looking to shake things up have never had an easier time changing their names.

Debuting onto the gaming scene in 2009, League of Legends is one of the most popular online games to date. That also means that some players who have been logging in since the start may be looking for fresh display names. Alternatively, those coming to the game from Arcane may have picked a name they didn’t actually want to commit to. Fortunately, updates in the last year have made changing one’s name much less of a hassle than in the past.

League players have two options for what name they want to change, and here’s to adjust both a Riot ID and an in-game username.

Changing LoL display name

Unlike in the past, users can now change their LoL display name for free, albeit with a different cost.

The Riot ID replaces the Summoner’s name in League of Legends and the display name for any Riot product. Previously, players had to spend 1,300 RP, or roughly $10, to change their name. In 2023, however, Riot went through the process of universalizing game handles across the board. Now, LoL players can change their name every 90 days for free, even if they can’t have different names per game.

How to change the display name in LoL.

Players looking to change their Riot ID can do so either directly through the League client or on the Riot website. Online, they are directly taken from the login page to a place where they can change their Riot ID. Those who already have the League client up can also navigate through to edit their name.

The relatively new Riot ID has two parts: the Game Name and the tagline. When going to change their names in LoL, users will see two spots ranging in size. The Game Name has to be between three and 16 characters, while the tagline can only be three to five. All names also can’t reference any famous esports players or teams (sorry, Faker fans) or the word “Riot.” Finally, as is standard with most display names, players can’t include personal information or profanity.

It’s worth noting again that changing one’s in-game name in League will do the same for any other Riot games. For instance, those who also play Valorant may want to think twice about choosing “JinxFan#bomb.”

Is it possible to change a Riot ID?

Players who want to change their overall username may run into more issues than with their Riot ID.

In Riot games, a player’s username is used to login to their account. The company transitioned to the globally unique username model back in 2021, where a name must be original across every game. Players at that time were given a free pass to change their login username to whatever they wanted provided it wasn’t in use already.

Unfortunately, it usually isn’t possible to change one’s Riot username. According to the help page, only extraordinary circumstances qualify for an official username edit, though what those circumstances may be isn’t specified. Users are certainly welcome to submit name change requests to Player Support anyway and see what happens. They just shouldn’t get their hopes up.
