How much does it cost to stream on Twitch

Some of the top streamers online are able to earn massive sums of money, but for those looking to break into streaming and strive towards those lofty heights, how much does it actually cost to create content and stream on Twitch?

The streaming industry is booming with new content creators appearing constantly to get their share of the pie. Twitch is by most measures the biggest livestreaming platforms going today, having become firmly established and boasting a large, global audience. This is why many newer content creators flock to Twitch to begin their streaming journeys.

While many new streamers focus on the potential revenues they might one day bring in, it must also be considered just how much it costs to stream on Twitch.

Twitch streamer snowwcone breaks down how much streaming costs

Streamer snowwcone revealed during a stream that she earns around $10,000 per month from streaming on Twitch, but that streaming costs being as high as they are can wipe those revenues out.

The streamer claimed during her broadcast that she typically spends $5,000 on traveling, $500 on her streaming setup, $200 on Wi-Fi, and another $200 on her IRL toolkit. She also included the $2,000 she spends on rent, as her home is also technically her streaming studio.

snowwcone also said she has to pay clippers and editors, which can further add to expenses. The content creator stated that traveling, hardware and software upgrades and updates, and outsourcing production elements make up a large part of her expenses. She claimed that after deducting her many expenses, she typically finds that she’s spent everything she brings in on her content.

Viewers were quick to react to the claim of snowwcone not having any income left despite earning around $10,000 from Twitch each month. Some alleged the streamer was mismanaging her money to be spending so much relative to her income. Others questioned why snowwcone continued to stream if she was truly seeing a financial loss each month. Still others defended the streamer as pursuing her dream job and investing in her own future success.

snowwcone is primarily an IRL streamer, so her expenses are higher than those of many other streamers who need to travel less and have simpler production needs. There are a variety of niches streamers can pick that involve far fewer costs.

snowwcone has just over 90,000 followers on Twitch, and her income is lower than that of the most popular streamers who can spend far greater amounts of money on their content. As an example, Imane “Pokimane” Anys had previously revealed that she spent between $120,000 and $240,000 on her production team alone. Pokimane is one of the biggest names in livestreaming, and she could make that amount back easily enough.

For smaller content creators, it’s important to factor in the costs required to one day make money from streaming, rather than potentially operating at a loss indefinitely.

How much does it cost for a new streamer to start on Twitch?

New and smaller streamers should be able to start streaming on Twitch or elsewhere for relatively little money, though the costs will vary depending on streaming setup and the individual creator’s needs.

The two aforementioned examples for may be extreme, because one is an active IRL streamer and the other is a top-tier content creator on Twitch. snowwcone needs to have a significant budget for traveling because she creates content on the go. Pokimane is also not the standard for how much it costs to stream on Twitch, because she is a massive creator with a full team and significant expenses that normal streamers just won’t have.

New and smaller streamers may only need to get a decent setup, consisting of a workable PC, a microphone, a camera, and a reliable internet connection. A paid mod or editor may become a necessity once streamers get enough viewership to justify such costs. But other than these elements, there aren’t too many expenses for just starting to stream on Twitch. And the internet is the only recurring cost, as the other base expenses are one-time upfront costs.

Twitch

A typical new streamer can get a decent camera for an average cost of $300, a PC for approximately $1,500, and a good microphone for $300-$400.  Streamers also need a good enough internet service to stream in high quality, which can cost approximately $60-$80 per month. Once a content creator has invested in their setup, they can stream for as little as $80 a month for internet, and a higher cost if they outsource editing. A mod or part-time editor can cost anywhere from $400-$800 per month.

Of course, if streaming on Twitch or anywhere else is going to be your full-time job, the cost of rent and other living expenses must also be considered. This is why snowwcone included the cost of rent in her own expenses. New streamers will certainly want to consider their cost of living when understanding how much streaming will cost them, and how much they’ll need to make back.
