How Good Will Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Be?

The Nintendo Switch run of games has been excellent by most metrics, but there are some things they haven’t managed to do better than in previous attempts. Since 2017, Nintendo has put out a ton of outstanding games. They’ve won awards, and the Switch is the second-best-selling console ever; it may even end up in first eventually.

That said, there are some things that have been replicated for the Switch that haven’t quite worked. Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort, as well as the other Wii titles like Wii Party or Wii Play, are beloved classics. Those party games haven’t worked out on Switch — even Switch Sports didn’t recapture the Wii Sports magic.

Nevertheless, they’re going after it again with Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. Will it live up to the original? Will it be better than Switch Sports was? Time will tell, but Kalshi traders have made their stance clear by trading on what the title’s Metacritic score will be upon release on October 22.

On Kalshi, there are often prediction markets for a game’s upcoming Metacritic scores. A majority of traders predicted that Marvel’s Wolverine would end up in the 80s, but it came up just shy at 77. Most new games get these markets, and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is no different. Here is the implied probability so far at the prediction market:

60+: 92%
65+: 80%
70+: 80%
75+: 40%
80+: 22%
85+: 30%
90+: 24%
95+: less than 1%

Based on this, the expectation is that it won’t surpass 75 on Metacritic. Traders are overwhelmingly confident that it won’t pass 80 if it does happen to break the 75 threshold.

Comparisons

We don’t know yet what Nintendo Switch Sports Resort will get, but we do know the scores of other games. The original, Wii Sports Resort, got a solid 80 score on Metacritic. Wii Sports got a surprisingly low 76. Nintendo Switch Sports got a 72, so it was lower than the predecessor. Not by a lot, though.

With that in mind, it is reasonable to expect that Nintendo Switch Sports Resort will end up lower than the 80 the original game got. Traders may or may not have used that logic, but the prediction results back that up. Most believe it is highly unlikely to get a better score than the Wii title.

☑️ My View

Researching these scores left me quite surprised. Wii Sports is an outstanding game, as is Wii Sports Resort. I can’t believe that Resort got the better score and that it’s still only 80. It is hard to predict anything higher than that for a new game that will likely fail to capture the magic of Wuhu Island and is leaving out some games.

It’s also on a console with worse motion controls (because the Wii Remote was designed almost exclusively for that, while the Switch Joy-Cons were not). There’s just nothing to suggest it will live up to the original, so I’m inclined to side with the Kalshi traders who predict it will land in the 60s or 70s. It’s Nintendo, so there is a quality baseline that will probably sneak it into the low 70s, but I can’t see it exceeding that.
