What We Learned in the GTA 6 Netflix Extended Look
On August 27, Netflix got the first major look at GTA 6. The extended look ahead of the November 19 launch gave us the best picture yet of the story. There was also plenty of gameplay mixed in, though this was very much a cinematic trailer. Here’s what we took away from it.

The Netflix lookahead opened with a particular scene from the game, one in which Jason and Lucia are attempting to find someone. The lookahead seemed to focus primarily on the GTA 6 storyline, giving fans a good look at some important scenes. It smoothly cut in and out of cutscenes and featured the classic Rockstar chat options to talk with NPCs.
Jason and Lucia were looking to pick up something from a local drug den, with NPCs in the background cooking the drugs themselves. The police bust in and break it up, creating a shootout with Jason, who is the playable character in this particular scene. The police in this scene, whether it’s relevant to the story or not, have no problem gunning down characters.
It also appears that Jason and Lucia know one of the cops. That’s essentially where the opening scene ends. After that, a much quieter scene unfolds, with Jason and Lucia getting ready for a party.
From there, we get different scenes that reveal what the characters will be up to, but it’s hard to piece together how they all connect. The order of events and where these occur in the game is also unknown, but we can safely predict that nothing we see happens late in the game.
If we had to pick out a thematic thread, though, it would be growing up and maturing. There are hints of “getting out of the game,” and the Netflix look at GTA 6 ends with another character telling Jason and Lucia that it doesn’t get better than right now, an obvious hint at the moral of the story.
It was also confirmed that in-game social media platforms will appear, with an influencer with more than a passing resemblance to N3on interacting with Lucia at one point.
Driving gameplay
It wouldn’t be a GTA game without some driving, and the GTA 6 Netflix lookahead gives a great look at the driving in the game. The characters drive around with no regard for traffic laws, which is exactly how everyone’s going to play. There is also an option to hold hands while walking together. When talking privately with another character, there’s even a button to smoke.
Since there are two protagonists, players get to ride as a passenger and lean out to shoot (in this case, shoot at police chasing them) in car chases. Players can also do the inverse and drive while the companion NPC(s) lean out the window instead.
It’s unclear how the switching is going to work when played, but there is obviously plenty of play for both characters. It does not appear that gamers will simply choose one character and play through the main story as them, à la Resident Evil 2.
Unsurprisingly, there’s plenty of what appears to be backstory of Jason and Lucia committing crimes. There was a brief glimpse of Lucia driving a jet ski, so perhaps the driving is not restricted to the ground. There’s also a clip of Lucia skydiving, so traversal is not at all limited.
Leaks suggested that GTA 6 would draw more from Red Dead Redemption 2 than GTA 5, and this Netflix lookahead seems to imply the same. The shooting mechanics appear to be identical, right down to crouching behind cover and peering out to fire. There was even a Dead Eye situation where time slowed down for Jason to shoot freely like in RDR2.
This was likely the final trailer for the game since it was 26 minutes long and will be out in just three months.
