Gen.G reaches the LoL Worlds final for the first time ever

After years of being the best team in League of Legends and always losing in the quarter- or semifinal of the World Championship, Gen.G reaches the LoL Worlds final for the first time ever. There, they will face the winner of Bilibili Gaming vs T1. Currently, Gen.G hasn’t lost a single game in the LoL Worlds Knockout Stage, as they beat Invictus Gaming 3-0.

Gen.G reaches the LoL Worlds final

GEN had this long-standing curse: no matter what happens, no matter how good they are, they cannot reach the final of the World Championship. Winning the LCK is easy, winning the Mid-Season Invitational isn’t much harder, but Worlds was this unattainable dream.

While not always being on this team, Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon has had the same tale. Perceived by many as the best mid laner or even best player in the world, he has never managed to convert his skills into a Worlds trophy.

Chovy has qualified for the World Championship every year since his first in 2019. At the tournament, he’s always made it to the playoffs. However, no final for him either since this year. This earned him the nickname 8884844, reflecting his placements at the event.

No matter how good they were, they would always fall in a way that nobody would bet on. In 2025 and 2024 both, they were extremely dominant. Yet it was KT Rolster and T1 who respectively bested them, two teams that they repeatedly beat in the LCK.

Now that this barrier is broken, there’s no telling how far they’ll go. Can Gen.G win Worlds? For that, they’ll face either Bilibili Gaming or T1. The latter is much more seasoned in terms of grand finals, after having played in eight of them already. As for BLG, they’re the strongest team from China and have yet to meet Gen.G in all of 2026.

Still, GEN is no longer playing under the weight of that curse that must have affected them in the past. And they’re entering the final looking scary.

Gen.G beats Invictus Gaming 3-0

While everyone was wondering if GEN would once again find a way to lose in the semifinal, they simply crushed Invictus Gaming. In the first game, IG took a poor dive that gave Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu two kills, and that was all he needed to run over the game. Invictus Gaming never recovered and lost in 34 minutes.

The second map had a similar story. Gen.G ganks top and succeeds, IG tries to towerdive bot and fails miserably. As a result, they’re now ahead everywhere on the map, and Invictus Gaming can never recover from it.

In game 3, IG finally pulls ahead. Song “Rookie” Eui-jin becomes a monster on Locke, and everything goes fine. Until IG starts losing fights, and Zi “JiaQi” Jia-Qi fails to attack the drake, resulting in Gen.G arriving in time to steal it.

The game is even once again, and in a tense moment, Joo “Duro” Min-kyu hooks JiaQi’s Ezreal. Ezreal tries to escape it by using his Arcane Shift… only in the wrong direction. IG loses on the spot, and Gen.G wins the series.

GEN is now 6-0 in the LoL Worlds Knockout Stage, and 4-1 in Swiss. Will they win Worlds?
