Fortnite Has Just Made Battle Royale Matches Shorter

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking that a Fortnite Battle Royale match takes a while, Epic Games may have just dropped the update you’ve been waiting for. When one survives all the way to the end of the match but comes short of the fabled Victory Royale, it can feel like a lot of time was spent for nothing.

However, thanks to the most recent tweak, matches are going to be a couple of minutes shorter. Over time, this will allow players to get into more matches during a session than before — and it will change how those matches are played.

Epic Games shortens Fortnite Battle Royale matches by two minutes

According to an X post by leaker HYPEX, Fortnite Battle Royale matches can now be up to two minutes and 28 seconds shorter than they used to be. At their longest, a match could have lasted over 23 minutes. Now, the maximum length clocks in at roughly 21 minutes.

Several tweaks were introduced to achieve this goal. First, the storm wait times were reduced by 98 seconds. The time between safe zone shrinkings has dropped, which does add a need to keep moving. The sense of urgency has been heightened.

Additionally, the storm closing times were reduced by 50 total seconds; this means the storm will move faster. When that timer starts, players must really start moving towards the next safe zone. Players may be surprised that their usual pace doesn’t hold up anymore.

Zone shrinking and more

To decrease the time even further, Epic Games shrunk the zones for Phases 2-5. They are roughly 20% smaller now. Finally, triangle-shaped storms have been removed. Epic began playing around with different shapes and sizes for the storm in Chapter 7, which began in November 2025.

But since then, they’ve decided to streamline Fortnite Battle Royale matches. From start to finish, whether that’s a Victory Royale or an early elimination, everything moves quicker now. Two-and-a-half minutes is not a large amount of time, but it’s a substantial decrease when the entire product was roughly 23 minutes long in the first place.

This could heavily impact the current season, though. Chapter 7 Season 3, which ends in a few weeks, has introduced sprites, such as TheBurntPeanut, who accidentally revealed his face earlier this year. These can be collected and exported, adding a collectible aspect to the game.

However, with a few minutes shaved off the total time spent on the island, players now have to loot, battle, and collect sprites in a shorter match time. It adds another layer of urgency when playing or watching at Fortnite betting sites.
