Fortnite adds over 30 AI voices to skins for Creative mode

Fortnite has come under fire recently for its usage of AI, with one collaboration immediately reexamining the partnership after that revelation. Generative AI usage in games is generally frowned upon by gamers, although game developers are more commonly using it now.

That, of course, includes Epic Games, which has just sort of doubled down on the AI usage in Fortnite. However, instead of the normal gen AI, Epic has assigned 36 voices to characters using independent voice actors who have agreed to let their voices be used.

According to renowned leaker ShiinaBR, Epic Games has introduced AI voices for 36 characters. These are not really going to impact anything in Battle Royale, though. This is mostly for Creative mode.

Creators can now use these characters in their maps and give them lines to say. Rather than have a voice actor voice those lines, though, Epic Games is using AI to recreate the voices for the characters.

It’s important to note that the voices are not tied to a purchase, so you won’t necessarily get access if you buy the skin or already own it. It’s pretty much exclusively for creators who may want to tell a story in a Creative map.

All players, whether they own the skins or not, will get access to the voices in that way. Some of the characters include:

• Cuddle Team Leader
• Brite Bomber
• Lexa Hexbringer
• Agent Jones
• The Imagined
• Helsie Midnight
• Fishstick
• Haylee Skye

What is particularly interesting about some of these is that they have existing voice actors, but those voices aren’t the ones used here. Epic didn’t have permission to use Troy Baker for Agent Jones. They can’t use Cherami Leigh (The Imagined), either.

It remains unlikely that the AI voices will be used in Fortnite storytelling, though. When there are live events with these characters involved, Epic may still use the voice actors they’ve been using.
