The 2026 EWC is on the horizon, and chess enthusiasts will likely be looking forward to learning about the tournament’s schedule, participating teams, and more.
Chess.com has ensured that the sport is recognized as an esport, hence its presence in the Esports World Cup (EWC) games lineup.
Chess fans already have a bunch of tournaments to watch over the years, though the 2026 EWC will be slightly different. Here’s everything you need to know about Chess at the 2026 Esports World Cup.
Chess at EWC 2026 format and details
Chess definitely isn’t a small name in the esports scene, but this Esports World Cup tournament will definitely be one of the biggest yet.
With a whopping $1,500,000 prize pool, it makes sense that some of the best players worldwide will want to go for the top spot at the Chess Esports World Cup. Like most other games at the event, the Chess tournament will only last five days. It’ll start on August 11, 2026, while the grand final will take place on August 15.

There are essentially three stages that fans will want to learn about before the tournament starts. These stages are the play-ins, the group stage, and the playoffs.
Play-ins
The play-ins will pit eight players against each other in a double-elimination bracket. Every player will get 10 minutes with no increment, and there will be two games per match. In case of any ties, the participating players will play a game of Armageddon as a tiebreaker.
Armageddon is essentially a single tiebreaker game. The white side receives more time than the black side. However, the black side is declared the winner if the game ends in a draw. This guarantees that every match has a winner.
Group stage
The top players from the play-ins will qualify for the group stage, where sixteen players will be divided into four groups of four players each. This stage will use the GSL tournament, which means that player 1 from each group will face off against player 2, while player 3 will face player 4.
Winners play each other to determine which player qualifies for the playoffs, while losers play each other with elimination on the line. A third deciding match is finally played between the remaining players, which means that two players from each group will qualify for the playoffs.
Playoffs
The final eight players will compete in a single-elimination bracket, where one loss means you’re eliminated.
- The quarterfinals will be four games per match, and the player with the higher score will advance to the semifinals.
- The semifinals will be six games per match, with the two best players advancing to the grand final
- The grand final will be played as a best-of-three sets instead of one long match. The first two sets will have four games, while the third set will only be played if both players win one set each. The third set will only have two games.
The player who wins the grand final will be crowned the winner of this year’s Chess EWC 2026.

Chess at the Esports World Cup 2026 predictions
It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Magnus Carlsen is the clear favorite to win this year’s Esports World Cup. After all, he’s the 2025 Chess Esports World Cup winner as well, and he’s one of the most consistent Chess players around. Esports betting sites also name him as the clear favorite, especially since the 10+0 time control is the player’s strongest discipline.

Hikaru Nakamura is another big name who’s one of the best rapid and blitz players. However, the player has historically struggled to get past Carlsen in knockout matches, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he only reaches the finals or semifinals.
Players who could potentially be dark horses include Ian Nepomniachtchi, Arjun Erigaisi, and Nodirbek Abdusattorov. All three players are fairly unpredictable and could swoop down and claim this year’s EWC trophy.
Finally, there’s Alireza Firouzja. His performance in Armageddon matches has been very strong, and he’s one of the few players capable of withstanding the pressure of Chess. While he’s somewhat inconsistent, he has shown the skills required to surprise many.
