Dota 2’s new Tidehunter Arcana is mind-blowing, but prepare to spend $200+ to get it

Night owls in North America and early risers in Europe woke up to a brand new Dota 2 Arcana, the first new release of Dota’s rarest and most-coveted cosmetics since 2024. The recipient? Tidehunter, whose Maw of the Megladon Arcana transforms the already selachian sea-dweller into a full-blown shark.
But while Arcana’s have traditionally been part of big events in Dota 2, either the now-discontinued Battle Passes, or most recently, narrative events such as Crownfall (which included two Arcanas for Skywrath Mage and Vengeful Spirit), Tidehunters new cosmetic is tied to the new Trove of Terror chest.
And to collect everything in the chest, you might have to splash out, with some rewards in the treasure automatically locked to potentially $200 of purchases. Here’s the breakdown.
Tidehunter Arcana and $200 Roshan skin, is Dota 2’s new Treasure worth it?
Let’s get this out of the way: The new Arcana is incredible. As we said in the title, mind-blowingly good. This is exactly what players expect from Valve’s highest tier of Dota 2 cosmetic, a new lease of life on the Hero that turns them from goofy to gallant, and makes every other skin they have look poor by comparison. This Arcana transforms Tidehunter, with three styles turning him into either a fearsome great white shark, a harrowing hammerhead shark, or a more traditional nod to his green with tiger stripes.
New effects, new accessories, new taunts, three styles, and the juicy narrative detail that Tidehunter is dragging the corpse of Kunkka behind him. Just *chefs kiss,* incredible.

And if we were paying now expected Arcana prices, this Arcana would be a steal. Since Valve packed up the Battle Passes, Arcanas have been able to be grabbed for about $40. The two Crownfall Arcanas sold for $34.99, but could be lowered to $27.00 with Crownfall Store Coins.
So let’s break down what this could cost. A Trove of Terror chest costs $4.99, with regional pricing around 4.39 Euros, £3.39, etc. Around $5 across the board. There’s 17 sets in the Treasure (16 Immortal sets which are equally incredible, and themed around the spooky season), two Rares, one Very Rare, and two Super Rare with the Arcana included in that. While there’s always a chance for a lucky pull, you’d have to assume that to get all the skins, you’re likely looking at around 20 chests.
That’s good (in a way), because there’s also a ward skin that unlocks at 12 chests ($60) and a Roshan skin that unlocks at a crazy 40 chests ($200). And add to that the fact there’s no guarantee to get the Arcana, you could spend hundreds and still be left dangling more shark bait.
But here’s where it maybe gets a little better. Prior to the discontinuation of the Battle Passes, Arcanas were tied into the levels of those passes. The average price of an Arcana back then was between $150-$250 dollars, depending on how much grinding and purchases you were making proportionally. That means the Tidehunter Arcana will likely cost you in the range of the previous battle pass-based ones.
And then there’s the random chance you put your first $5 into the treasure slot machine and get the Arcana the first time. And there’s recycles, so you’ll likely get the Roshan for less than $200. But these are edge cases.
Overall, these sets in the treasure are incredible, and the Arcana is the pièce de résistance. Individually, definitely worth $5. And maybe all 17 are worth $85. But after that, we really don’t think a Roshan skin or the gamble for the Arcana is worth around $200 for most people.
