Unlike Pokemon, Palworld is playable across multiple platforms, raising the question for players of whether it has crossplay between its multitude of game versions.
Palworld took the world by storm when it broke records in large part by tweaking Pokemon’s tried and tested formula. While players catch, train, and battle with creatures fittingly called Pals, features such as guns and other more mature themes than what’s typically found in Pokemon give Palworld a separate identity from Nintendo’s sweeter, more sensitive series.
Another thing that sets Palworld apart from the first-party Nintendo exclusive is the game’s availability across multiple platforms. From Xbox to PC, Palworld is much more accessible than most Pokemon games. That leaves players wondering whether the game has crossplay and what future updates they might still expect to come from Palworld.
While Palworld does have crossplay, it only applies to Xbox and PC players who specifically play the game through the Microsoft Store or Game Pass.
If a player owns the title on Steam, they can’t join players on any other platform. The same applies to PlayStation users, as they’re restricted to only playing with other players on a PlayStation console. As for cross-progression, only the versions of the game that have crossplay also have cross-progression, which means that a PlayStation player can’t transfer their account progress to a PC version of the game or vice-versa.
The good news is that doesn’t mean the game won’t get proper crossplay between platforms in the future. Palworld’s official X account posted a roadmap containing several future features developers have planned for the title. The roadmap reveals that the game will get a potential final boss encounter, world transfers, and more, all alongside more extensive crossplay. Although the account didn’t share a release date for any of these items, fans believe that developers at PocketPair are focusing on launching the new collection of features in the 2025 calendar year.
Palworld’s early access will likely last through much of 2025, though expanded crossplay is expected come to the game before then. In addition to crossplay, players will also get cross-server Pal trading. Since the Microsoft Store and Game Pass versions of Palworld only have dedicated and community servers, it’ll make sense to release crossplay before this feature.
The Palworld roadmap also revealed other features coming to the game, including an ending scenario, new pals, and fresh collaborations with other game franchises.
Arguably the biggest surprise is that Palworld will collaborate with other known IPs, including the still-popular Terraria. Since Palworld’s legal battle with Nintendo is common knowledge, most IPs might think twice before collaborating with Pocketpair’s game. Not so for those already shown to be getting involved.
Palworld will also get an ending scenario that’ll likely give players a final boss to battle. It’s unknown how the game will tackle its main story’s ending and whether the developer will add additional story content when the early access period ends. With new ways to strengthen Pals, more technologies, and improvements being made to the overall game’s optimization, Palworld fans have much to look forward to.
