How Will Digger Fare on Rotten Tomatoes?

As of now, only a select few people have seen Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Tom Cruise’s new movie, Digger. The review embargo is in place, so there isn’t a Letterboxd rating, IMDb score, or Rotten Tomatoes percentage. Polymarket traders, however, have taken a look at marketing and the immediate reactions to determine what the score will be on the review-aggregation website.

Polymarket traders predict Digger score on Rotten Tomatoes

On Polymarket, there are five available markets for the Digger Rotten Tomatoes score, which should be revealed in a matter of days leading up to the wide release on October 2. Will the score land in the 90s, signifying a huge success? Traders don’t think so currently.

60+ is at 33%
70+ is at 10%
75+ is at 7%
80+ is at 2%
90+ is at 3%

The problem for Digger

There are two main problems with Digger that could factor into its eventual Rotten Tomatoes score. First are the main ingredients and what everyone has seen so far. Tom Cruise is beloved, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu has made Oscar-level films on multiple occasions. Neither have really done anything like this, though, especially Cruise. His usual star power is absolutely going to be muted by the bold swings the movie seems to be taking and the fact that he’s totally unrecognizable in prosthetics; this may well drive tickets and initial interest but a well reviewed release is another matter.

It has since been debunked, but a viral theory is that the movie is a secret musical. That isn’t true, but it speaks to an overall level of concern and confusion surrounding the movie. It has been almost impossible to pin down how the moviegoing world is actually feeling about Digger. Does Cruise have enough pull to win over audiences in a seemingly weird movie?

While the critics’ scores haven’t been revealed, there have been some early reactions after the initial premiere of the movie. Some have called it a timely masterpiece and a perfect satire. Others have called it indulgent and messy. The reaction thus far has been quite split, so it’s difficult to tell. Some who have seen the movie say it’ll play better with the Oscars crowd than general audiences, but will that translate to the overall reception of the film? It remains to be seen.

☑️ My Take

As a certified Tom Cruise (and Jesse Plemons, who is in a small role here) lover, I am all-in on the movie, and none of the promotion turned me off. It looks great, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s general track record would lead me to expect success. However, that’s just me, one moviegoer. Everyone else is obviously on a different wavelength, making it hard to predict sweeping success in the box office or in the critical reception.

Because of this, I believe the Polymarket traders are probably spot on. There is far too much talent on and off-screen for this movie to be a flop with critics, who generally appreciate those things more than audiences. But there is enough of a mixed reaction so far to temper expectations. Something in the 60s, which would be “Fresh” on the Tomatometer, feels absolutely appropriate. Some will feel it should be much lower; others higher. So, something in the relative middle makes too much sense.
