CS2 FACEIT players will now need to re-earn their rank

FACEIT Season 8 will introduce a significant change to player ELO in Counter-Strike 2, aiming to reduce long-term skill inflation at the top. Here’s what the new FACEIT ELO reset means in CS2 and how it works.
Skill inflation is a common issue in shooters, and happens in almost every ranked game. Players return at outdated ranks after inactivity, which throws off match quality and makes games frustrating for everyone. Developers have come up with different ways to keep ranks aligned with actual skill levels, and ELO recalibration is one of the more popular methods to achieve that balance.
FACEIT is now introducing a soft ELO reset that will require all players to play placement matches at the start of each season to unlock their skill level.
How to unlock FACEIT ELO?
All players must complete 10 placement matches to unlock their ELO on FACEIT, whether they’re new to the platform or returning after a period of inactivity.
After Season 8, everyone will be required to play placement matches in order to receive a skill level. This will force inactive players to actually warm up a little before diving into the games bearing an ELO badge. The update is aimed at ensuring that each ELO badge accommodates only those that truly deserve it.

It’s common in FPS games for players to go inactive for months and then return to the same rank they left off at. While that might seem harmless on paper, it can be frustrating for players who have been actively grinding and improving, only to be matched with others whose skill no longer reflects their rank.
It’s worth noting, though, that this isn’t a hard reset, and those that play actively may not notice significant change in their level. Level 10s at the top of the leaderboard will feel the recalibration the most, as the game will harshly judge the skill level to counter inflation; this is to keep the highest level of FACEIT highly competitive.
The largest change will be uniform across the board for inactive players, regardless of their levels. After Season 7, inactivity will be punished in the form of ELO readjustment, with skill level going down in most cases. This change will clearly be most noticeable when playing CS2 yourself, but it is also worth keeping an eye out when streaming, or wagering at Bitcoin betting sites.
According to FACEIT, some players may even be able to unlock higher ELO levels than before if they play better than those who are currently in their skill group.
While the system isn’t new, having already been used in games like VALORANT, it’s a much-needed change. FACEIT is seen as the home of top-level CS2 competition, so it’s only fair that players actively earn and maintain the rank they hold.
