Is the CS2 Esports Nations Cup Going To Be a Huge Disappointment?

The Esports World Cup recently rolled out a new tournament series called the Esports Nations Cup, where participants can only compete under their country’s flag — just like the FIFA World Cup. 2026 is going to be the first time the Esports Nations Cup plays out, and though there was a lot of hype surrounding it, there are concerns it might fall short of expectations.

Esports Nations Cup Filled with “Tier 2” Participants

The qualifiers for the CS2 Esports Nations Cup have recently ended, with 24 countries booking their spots at the event. However, fans quickly noticed that the participating players aren’t the ones we see on huge playoffs stages — they’re mostly players who are stuck grinding in lower-tier, online Counter-Strike tournaments.

For example, Denmark, one of the most storied Counter-Strike countries, survived the European qualifiers. When hearing “Denmark,” you’re thinking of the likes of dev1ce, Magisk, blameF — these types of players. However, the Danish roster consists of lesser-known players from a team named Echo.

France is another one. Instead of ZywOo or apEX, we’re only getting Ex3rcice and Djoko, which are the only two notable players on the roster.

Even household countries like Russia, Ukraine, and Sweden aren’t competing, though Russia is banned from competing in the competition.

Why Are Top Players Not Playing at the Esports Nations Cup?

Representing your country and playing at a million-dollar tournament sounds like a great deal, so why aren’t the best CS2 players in the world competing at this tournament? Where are the players from Team Falcons, Team Vitality, Team Spirit, NAVI, and others?

Well, the main issue is that the 2026 Esports Nations Cup is scheduled to run from November 10 to 15. And what tournament is happening in the same month? The PGL Singapore Major, which starts on November 25, only ten days after ENC.

So, the best CS2 teams who know they’re going to compete at the Major will prioritize it above the Esports Nations Cup. They’ll use the time to prepare for the biggest tournament of the year, because they know they can contend for the title. Scheduling is the main reason why you don’t see players from the top 10 teams in the world competing at this event.

Comparison to Other ENC Titles

The thing is, Counter-Strike is the only esport suffering from the unfavorable schedule. For example, Dota 2’s biggest event is The International, which takes place in August. With the Esports Nations Cup taking place in November, many Tier 1 Dota players are taking part at the event, because the most important tournament of the year would already be over.

For League of Legends, Worlds 2026 ends on November 14. Then, the Esports Nations Cup takes place on November 21, so again, no scheduling issues there.

Though we won’t see the top CS2 players playing out the Esports Nations Cup, it should still be a solid tournament to watch and place CS2 bets on at sites like Roobet.
