Age of Mythology never got its big LAN moment - Now it will at Gameathlon Athens

After years of decline, and the indignity of being left of top Age of Empires events like Red Bull: Wololo, Age of Mythology will once again have a top-flight esports tournament as the game books a spot at Gameathlon Athens in September.

Unveiled earlier this week, but announced via Reddit on May 28, the Age of Mythology Athens LAN, organized by Tim “Boit” Voutas, in collaboration with World’s Edge and Microsoft, will take place at Gameathlon 2026, between Sep. 11 and Sep. 13 later this year. And to make sure all the top pros get there, there’s a unique crowd-funding system in place.

Age of Mythology heads to Olympic arena for Gameathlon 2026

In his post on Reddit, Boit explained the reason he wanted to create such an event:

“AoM never got its LAN moment. While StarCraft was filling arenas, AoM sat on the outside looking in. Recently Age of Mythology had a remaster and it’s better than ever right now. It has a passionate competitive scene and genuinely spectacular viewing that has yet to have a massive LAN since the World Cyber Games 2003.”

As Boit goes on to explain, Gameathalon is Greece’s largest gaming convention, and is expected to host around 20,000+ attendees.

The event will be Age of Mythology: Retold’s (the remaster of Age of Mythology) first major LAN at an Olympic Arena. Featuring a $10,000 prize the event will be open to all, with online qualifiers taking place in July.

But perhaps the most notable part is the crowd-funded aspect of the event. With an event happening in Europe, Boit wanted to make sure players from the Americas and beyond could attend the event. As a result, he set crowd-funding goals as follows:

Helping with the crowd-funding doesn’t get you just a better tournament though. Instead, beyond certain thresholds you get special rewards you can pick from. Anyone who donates above $15 will have their name appear in the overlay, and beyond $100 coaching session, signed t-shirts, merch, and even a signed keyboard are up for grabs. Full info is available on either the explainer video, official website, or on Boit’s Discord.

As previously mentioned, Age of Mythology has slipped from the docket in some of the larger Age of Empires and RTS events, including Red Bull’s  Wololo event. In 2024, Age of Mythology was part of the El Reinado event. In 2026, in London, Mythology was sadly absent. Many of its biggest players, such as Adam “1puppypaw” Svoboda, have switched to Age of Empires IV to continue their competitive career.

However, with a huge event with potentially a massive audience on the horizon, and some great crowd-funding helping things along, Age of Mythology may finally get its big LAN moment, aptly in one of the countries most tied to mythology itself.

Age of Mythology Athens LAN will take place from Sep. 11 until Sep. 13 at the Tae Kwon Do Olympic Arena in Athens, Greece.
