Mew ex may have become one of the best counters in Pokemon TCG Pocket, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to counter it right back.
Pokemon TCG Pocket‘s newest booster pack Mythical Island entered the meta with a bang, introducing several game-changing cards. One such card is Mew ex, which needs only three of any energy to steal the opponent’s active Pokemon’s moveset. In practice, this leaves Mew ex able to one-shot powerhouses like Charizard ex and Mewtwo ex and holding its own against Articuno ex and Venusaur ex. The card has quickly become an integral part of many decks as a formidable multipurpose counter.
Despite its potential strength and utility, Mew ex has faults that can be exploited by a determined player.
The Pikachu ex deck has card-specific requirements that effectively counter any Mew ex that shows up.
Â
Although not the most powerful individual card, Pikachu ex works by having a full deck of electric-type Pokemon. Its main move, Circle Circuit does 30 damage per benched electric Pokemon. The new Mythical Island Pikachu works similarly, though only dealing 10 damage per benched Pokemon. Mew ex can only use Circle Circuit, however, if it’s in a deck with electric cards. otherwise, the move does zero damage.
An iteration of the Pikachu ex deck, then, may be the best possible counter to Mew ex currently available in the meta. Pikachu ex is usually paired with Zapdos ex, who can deal 150-200 damage with lucky coin flips. Additionally, the Raichu from Mythical Island can deal 20 damage to each of the opponent’s benched Pokemon while also attacking the active one. While not outright able to defeat Mew ex, it can make it easier for the next Pokemon in a player’s hand to swoop in.
Mew ex may be a great counter to many decks in Pokemon TCG Pocket, but that doesn’t matter if players can one-shot it fast enough.
Fortunately for many, Mew ex only has 130 HP. While higher than most, there are a number of cards that can one-shot Mew ex so long as they get off a hit before it does. Pokemon that can consistently knock it out include the following.
Additionally, players can pull from cards that can do more damage through coin flips or additional attached energy. Using trainer cards like Misty, Giovanni, and Blaine also will increase the impact of specific Pokemon cards.
Most of the high damage-dealing cards require at least one evolution stage and three to four energy before launching their ultra-powerful attacks. This means that the key to beating Mew ex with one of these cards is building up the desired move before it builds up Genetic Shuffle.
Mew ex may be a game-changing counter, but it certainly isn’t a game-ending one. With enough careful planning and a helpful dose of luck, players can effectively counter the new card for a well-earned victory.
