Avengers: Doomsday vs Spider-Man: Brand New Day: Which Marvel Movie Will Have 2026's Biggest Opening Weekend?

Marvel is set to release another major movie before the end of 2026, with Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day emerging as contenders for the year’s biggest opening weekend.
Marvel has had a busy 2026 so far, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day generating considerable box office anticipation and VisionQuest receiving positive reviews. Next up is Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for a worldwide release in December. With two major MCU releases competing for box office supremacy, fans are already speculating about which film will claim the biggest opening weekend of the year.
It isn’t surprising that two Marvel franchises will battle it out for the biggest opening weekend in 2026
The Avengers franchise has been one of the strongest for Marvel, particularly in terms of opening weekends. A larger roster filled with superheroes doesn’t hurt the franchise. The first Avengers grossed $207.4 million, Infinity War made $257.7 million, and Endgame set the record at $357.1 million. There is significant hype surrounding Avengers: Doomsday, especially because Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans are set to return. This has many fans speculating that the movie will easily surpass the collections of the previous titles in the franchise.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man is a massively popular character, and Tom Holland’s solo films have grossed a decent amount of money in their opening weekends. Far From Home made $92.6 million; his first movie, Homecoming, grossed $117 million; and the three-Spidey collaboration movie No Way Home set the record at $260.1 million. The latest Spider-Man: Brand New Day surpassed Endgame, setting a record of $360.1 million.
Brand New Day has set the bar, and Doomsday is tasked with crossing that milestone to become the biggest opening weekend of 2026. Polymarket traders are optimistic that Doomsday will be able to surpass Brand New Day and set the record. This wouldn’t come as a surprise to most fans because of the multi-star roster of the Avengers franchise and the return of Downey and Evans.
Polymarket traders think it’s a Marvel faceoff
Prediction markets have several contracts for which movie will set the biggest opening weekend in 2026. The market is specifically for three-day domestic opening weekends. These movies include Dune: Messiah, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Avengers: Doomsday. Movies prediction market traders are flocking to the two Marvel movies, which makes sense, as the superhero movies are known for setting massive box office figures.

Avengers: Doomsday is currently leading the prediction market with a 56% implied probability of being the winner, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a little behind with 45%. Of course, these don’t guarantee anything, but several contracts have been resolved as No without achieving the desired outcome. These include Wuthering Heights, Scream 7, Michael, Toy Story 5, The Odyssey, and several other notable 2026 releases.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to release globally on December 18, 2026.
