These Are All the Horse Pokémon Through Generation 9
Pokémon have long been designed after real-life things, primarily animals. There have been horse Pokémon, dog Pokémon, and more throughout nine generations (and spinoffs). Horses in particular are quite popular with players, and the animal’s real-life grace and power transfers expertly over to the game.
It helps that some of the horse Pokémon in these games are among the best and most memorable Pokémon you can get. They can be pretty powerful, and there are probably some really good ones you didn’t realize were themed after the equine animal. Here’s a list of all horse Pokémon through Generation 9.
All horse Pokémon through Scarlet and Violet
Ponyta and Rapidash

In Generation 1, we got the most iconic horse Pokémon of all: Ponyta. To this day, there really isn’t another one that comes to mind when thinking of them. Ponyta and Rapidash are very clearly designed after horses, with flaming manes to boot.
In later generations, some longtime players complained that new Pokémon were lazily designed based on animals or other object, but we can see with this horse Pokémon that this has been a thing for a long time. In fact, other than turning their manes and tails into flames, Ponyta and Rapidash are both nothing more than animated horses.
Palkia (Origin Forme)
Palkia is one of those subtle horse Pokémon you probably didn’t realize counted, but take a look at its design. It’s quadripedal like a horse, and the shape is pretty accurate. It has a head and neck that rises up over its back. If it had arms, it might be disqualified from this list, but it doesn’t, and that keeps it looking like a horse.
Origin Forme Dialga is similarly shaped, but it’s much more like a dinosaur than a horse with its bowed legs and long neck. Palkia is much more regal and literally has a flowing tail in its Origin Forme, which only adds to the horse comparisons.
Arceus

Another one you probably weren’t expecting is Arceus. Yes, the god of Pokemon is a horse. Similar to Palkia, it is extremely regal and has the same exact shape as a horse. It’s quadripedal. You could argue that it’s more similar to a deer, but we’re counting the flowy top of its head as a mane because a deer does not have that, nor does Arceus have antlers.
Blitzle and Zebstrika
Once again, we have a pair of horse Pokémon like Ponyta and Rapidash. Technically, these are both designed after zebras, but zebras and horses are ridiculously close to one another. They’re from the same family, and both Blitzle and Zebstrika look a whole lot like horses.
Keldeo

Keldeo is just a pony, which is a young horse. It’s small and rather unimpressive, which is ironic since it’s a Mythic and one of the most powerful horse Pokémon on this list. More closely, Keldeo is a unicorn because it has a horn coming out of its head and its beautiful mane. Unicorns are not real, but they’re pretty much just horses with horns, so this one absolutely counts.
Mudbray and Mudsdale
If you weren’t convinced by the clear horse design, let the names of these Pokemon that evolve from or into one another be evidence: Mudbray, as in braying, the noise a horse makes, and Mudsdale, as in Clydesdale, the most popular breed of horse. Mudbray is a little donkey-esque, but its name and the fact that it evolves into essentially a Clydesdale are evidence enough.
Glastrier and Spectrier

These Legendary Pokémon are a pair of horses. Glastrier is just a white horse with ice replacing its mane and tail. It also has frozen feet. Spectrier is a black horse with a ghastly and ethereal mane and tail. It may be a ghost, but it is unequivocally a horse Pokémon.
Note: Interestingly, no horse Pokémon were added in Scarlet and Violet, but there may be some in Winds and Waves next year.
